This composer had many over-the-top ideas about how opera should be performed. In fact, he was so passionate about his operatic philosophy that he built his own theater that would serve as the main performance space for his operas. The theater opened in 1876 with the world premiere production of this composer's monumental cycle of four operas based on subjects from Norse and ancient German mythology. In this excerpt, a hero bids his beloved farewell as he ventures off into the wilderness in search of adventure.
