It is widely known that Vivaldi worked at a girl’s orphanage, but did you know that he didn’t enjoy much job security? The board of the orphanage voted each year on whether to keep their teachers for the next year, and sometimes Vivaldi didn’t make the cut. So his employment there was intermittent for close to forty years. But how did they ever get along without him? He was originally hired as a violin teacher, but held many different positions during his employment at the orphanage including instructor of all stringed instruments, chorus master, and music director. All this; and he wasn’t a bad composer either!
