State legislators met last month to discuss whether footage captured by police body cameras should be made public.
Indiana law doesn't provide specific direction as to whether police body camera footage should be available to the public, but it does have what's called an investigatory record exception, which means law enforcement can indefinitely withhold information if it's involved in an investigation, even after that investigation is over.
Weighing the pros and cons of placing body cameras on law enforcement has been a hot topic in the last year, after questionable details behind a number of high profile police killings have generated widespread distrust between the public and the police.
