Most fans consider Donald Fagan and Walter Becker to be ultimately the only true members of Steely Dan. It may be a stretch to consider non-musicians in this category but producer Gary Katz and audio engineer Roger Nichols made essential contributions to each of the core albums.
Steely Dan was first and foremost a studio concept Their lasting identity are the painstaking creations made in the studio on recording equipment that was cutting edge for their time. The albums “Pet Sounds” and “Sgt. Pepper’s” could not exist without multitracking. Neither could Steely Dan.
