I was a nonconformist. I was one who marched to my own drummer, much to the dismay of a number of people—colleagues, even my parents. I still march to my own drummer, but I think I'm playing a much more intelligent tune than I did when I was young.

Maestro Effron was on the conducting staff of the New York City opera, head of the Brevard Music Center, and before coming to Indiana University, was in charge of the orchestral program at the Eastman School of Music.
