The Monroe County Planning Department held its fourth and final listening session Tuesday to gather input for its drafted zoning map.

Sojourn House alleges the Board of Zoning Appeals discriminated against program participants by denying the variance request for a home in eastern Monroe County.

A nonprofit serving women who’ve been trafficked and exploited says the county’s denial to grant them a zoning variance is discrimination.

Officials at Monroe County’s Sojourn House for Women plan to seek legal advice, after the Board of Zoning Appeals opted not to hear the nonprofit’s amended appeal for a zoning variance.

The Monroe County Board of Zoning Appeals denied Sojourn House for Women’s zoning request for the property it bought in December on East Kerr Creek Road.

“There really is no other appropriate property in the city, so we're going to be looking for land in the county now,” commissioner Lee Jones said. “We anticipate a little bit more cooperation in the county.”

The project is the first duplex approved in a single-family neighborhood since the UDO was amended in 2021.

The Brown County Board of Zoning Appeals will hear a proposal from a developer who wants to build an RV Park along Old State Road 46.
