The Monroe County Planning Department held its fourth and final listening session Tuesday to gather input for its drafted zoning map.
Now the department will take that feedback to make modifications to the zoning map draft.
One goal of updating the county’s zones and land uses for the first time since 1997 is to consolidate some of categories.
For instance, the existing map has three different categories for general business and commercial zones, which are combined into one in the new draft. The new draft takes the number of zones from 45 down to 16.
Kyle Hannon, a project manager for Envision Ellettsville, said the town is implementing a new land use map and is creating a local zoning ordinance for the town.
“That's the hot place for development now for both housing, and businesses," he said. "So I just would encourage a lot of communication because there are things going on that are a lot. The UDO process will be struggling to keep up with what's going on."
Hannon hopes the county and town continue to communicate so that developing plans correspond with the town’s long-term goals.

Other attendees had questions about what would be allowed on their residential property if its zoning was changed.
The listening session was just to gather initial public input and wasn’t a formal hearing. The county will send out mailed notice for formal hearings on the maps next fall.
