Nearly 50 farmers were recognized as River Friendly Farmers at the Indiana State Fair on Wednesday.

The Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts honored the farmers who help sustain—and in some cases enhance—their natural environments.

Recipients range from an urban farm in Indianapolis to corn and soybean farms in the state’s most rural areas.

Among them was Carl Schmitt. His farm has been in the family since the 1850s.

"I feel very honored, because people are actually trying to do a better job with their resources," Schmitt says. "[They are] trying to leave it better than they found."

Schmitt was one of 49 farmers honored.  The Indiana State Fair runs through Aug. 19.
