A non-profit spay and neuter clinic based in Bloomington will offer free services for dozens of neglected dogs recently removed from a Martin County property.

The Martin County Humane Society and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department rescued 72 severely neglected dogs last month from what they say was a puppy mill. The dogs went to animal welfare organizations across the state for care.

Executive Director of Pets Alive Melissa Lewis says someone heard about the situation and wanted to help

"We have an anonymous donor that has stepped forward and is providing a match to spay and neuter all of these animals for free that came in through this puppy mill as they get healthy enough," Lewis says.

Pets Alive offers affordable spaying and neutering services in 18 south central Indiana counties.

The organization will perform surgeries on 22 of the dogs Wednesday.

While some of the dogs have already been adopted, others are still receiving veterinary care.
