Gov. Eric Holcomb says he tried marijuana as a college student, but he doesn't support efforts to allow medical or recreational marijuana use in Indiana.

The Republican governor answered "yes" Wednesday when he was asked during a Statehouse news conference if he had ever used marijuana.

Holcomb said he tried pot while he was in college despite knowing it was illegal. He graduated in 1990 from southeastern Indiana's Hanover College.

Before he was asked the marijuana question, Holcomb said he opposes bills that would allow medical or recreational marijuana use in Indiana.

Neighboring Michigan, Illinois and Ohio are among the states that have taken legalization steps.

Holcomb said he's not convinced other states "had made a wise decision" in legalizing marijuana, which remains illegal at the federal level.
