Bloomington Utilities Service Board To Consider Sewer Rate Hike

The City of Bloomington Utilities Service Board announced this week it will consider raising sewer rates by 3 percent for in-town customers and 15 percent for customers outside Bloomington.

A news release from the city says a recent cost-of service study showed servicing customers outside the city limits to be 12 percent per 1,000 gallons of wastewater more costly than serving those who live within Bloomington.

In late 2016, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management ordered City of Bloomington Utilities to increase the capacity of the Dillman Road Wastewater Treatment Plant. The release says the proposed rate increase will fund $30 million over the next five years to increase capacity at Dillman and make improvements at both the Dillman and Blucher Poole Wastewater Treatment Plants.

The USB will consider service fee recommendations Sept. 3 and if approved, the Common Council will consider the changes Sept. 4-18.
