Indiana‘s Superintendent of Public Instruction is happy with the progress she is made only five weeks into the job.
Democrat Glenda Ritz says she is developed positive relationships with a few Republican lawmakers because they have been talking about education and not politics. She says she wants to have good relationships with all lawmakers.
"I‘ve had a lot of experience really through my 34-year career of working with people together, finding that common ground, moving ahead, finding out the best ways to take practice to be a benefit to kids," she says.
Ritz says she spoke with Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma recently over the school voucher program and assured him that, even though she does not support it, she will administer the program as required by law.
Ritz says because of these discussions, she has been able to answer questions and allay fears which has resulted in great conversations which she hopes continues into the future.
