Who Won Nominations In The Open Seats In Tuesday's Primary

Two Republican state representatives secured primary election victories in their bids to move to the state Senate.

Republicans are hoping to gain another state Senate seat with the retirement of longtime Democratic lawmaker Lindel Hume.

Leading the charge for the GOP will be Jasper Representative Mark Messmer, who cruised to an easy primary victory. He will face Dubois County Commissioner Larry Vollmer in the fall.

The GOP nominee to replace Messmer is businessman Mike Braun, who doesn't yet have a Democratic opponent.

Lowell Republican Rick Niemeyer is also leaving his House seat, winning the primary in the race to replace GOP Senator Sue Landske, who retired after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Niemeyer will face Newton County Commissioner Roxanna Hanford.  Seeking to replace Niemeyer for Republicans is state Department of Environmental Management Regional Director Michael Aylesworth.

The most hotly-contested open seat primary pitted former Fort Wayne City Councilwoman Liz Brown against Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries, with Brown emerging victorious.  She will face attorney Jack Morris in November in a race to replace retiring GOP Senator Tom Wyss.
