Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles says about five million of its customers overcharged for fees have received another $29 million in refunds.
The BMV said Friday that $28.75 million was refunded in recent months to customers by crediting their BMV accounts. Those can be applied to their next BMV transaction or sent to customers as a check if they request one.
An audit conducted last year found the BMV had overcharged motorists more than $60 million for various fees since 2013.
About $30 million in overcharges were previously refunded following a class-action lawsuit. A second lawsuit involving additional fees is ongoing.
The BMV has admitted in court documents to more than 100 weight-class overcharges. Gov. Mike Pence signed a law in March that's intended to simplify the BMV's fee structure.
