1 Kayaker Dead, 1 Hospitalized After White River Rescue

The Indianapolis Fire Department says one kayaker has died and one remains hospitalized after being rescuedfrom the White River in Indianapolis.

Battalion Chief Rita Reith says 48-year-old Lawrance Morrissey of Fishers died Sunday after he and another kayaker became stuck in the churning water near the Broad Ripple dam on the city's north side.

Reith says Morrissey was unconscious and given CPR after he surfaced in the river near a rescue boat.

Reith says the name of the other kayaker hasn't been released. She says the condition of that 54-year-old man has improved after he was initially reported in critical but stable condition.

The strength of the rushing water pulled life vests off both men. High and fast-moving water was reported following recent heavy rains.
