A new report says the small Lake County community of St. John is the safest city in the state. The study from the National Council for Home Safety and Security ranked the state's 50 safest cities using recent FBI and population data.
The report says St. john saw only three violent crimes last year and 87 property crimes. Zionsville, Carmel, Lowell and Fishers were also among the top five safest cities.
Many of Indiana's larger cities didn't make the list, including Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend and Bloomington.
According to the report, Indiana has a violent crime rate of 2.93 per 1,000 people. You can see if your city made the list here.
