Indiana University athletics has announced new security measures at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and Memorial Stadium. The new precautions include a clear bag, a metal detector policy and no seat cushions.
The clear bag rule means fans must put their items into a clear, plastic bag that's no bigger than 12"x6"x12". Fans can also use a one-gallon clear, freezer bag. Small clutches, approximately the size of a hand, are also allowed. Each person entering the stadium is limited to one clear bag and one clutch.
All other bags are now banned.
IU says that the measures are not in response to specific threats. Security firm MSA Security, hired by the Big Ten, advised the changes. The security company also made several other recommendations, but IU has yet to disclose details.
IU is tenth in the Big Ten conference to add a clear bag policy. The other four schools don't allow any bags.
The athletic department plans to provide fans with free clear bags at the IU football team's home game against Ohio State on Aug. 31.
