Bloomington Construction Sign Hacked To Show Messages Protesting ICE, Armored Vehicle

An electronic construction sign on the corner of South Woodlawn Avenue and East Grimes Lane was hacked Wednesday morning in protest to the city’s purchase of an armored vehicle.

The sign displayed the words “ABOLISH ICE” and “BURN THE BEARCAT” in reference to the newly acquired Critical Incident Response Team vehicle that was revealed to the public on Tuesday night.

The city announced the purchase of the controversial Lenco Bearcat in February. Many residents have protested, voicing concerns about police militarization since the purchase of the CIRT vehicle.

Bloomington Communications Director Yaël Ksander confirmed the sign display was an act of vandalism.

She says the message has been removed and police are continuing to investigate the matter.
