Bloomington Officials Meet With Concerned Leaders About Overdose Deaths Map

Bloomington leaders met with behavioral health groups Tuesday to discuss the city’s controversial decision to publish information about overdoses online.

A map posted on the website bloomingtonrevealed.com includes, among other things, the exact addresses where overdose deaths occurred.

Monroe County Commissioner Amanda Barge criticized the city’s decision to publish those details, because they have the potential to shame members of the community.

Representatives from Centerstone and Wheeler Mission voiced their concerns about the website during a private meeting with city leaders.

City of Bloomington Communications Director Yael Ksander says it was a productive meeting. She defends the website, saying it doesn’t reveal anything that isn’t already publicly available through the coroner’s office.

But she says the city is open to changing what information is listed.

"It’s a question of whether we keep that specific data there, whether we modify it somehow, and make that data slightly less accessible," Ksander says.

Ksander says the data has been online since February.
