Indianapolis Schools Again Slim Down Funding Request

Indiana's largest school district is again slimming down its request for additional tax dollars from voters.

Indianapolis Public Schools officials on Tuesday night proposed a $315.2 million operating referendum. They're also seeking a downsized capital referendum to raise $52 million for building upgrades and safety improvements.

The referendum package would allow the district to raise teacher pay, but could require cuts in services. Superintendent Lewis Ferebee says the district is trying to strike a balance between what taxpayers can handle and what's needed.

The proposal could be on the November ballot. Earlier, the district had sought to generate about $725 million, down from an initial $936 million request. A $200 million capital referendum to help fund building improvements and other projects also was initially proposed.
