The historic firetower at McCormick’s Creek State Park is closed so workers can begin restoration work on the structure.
The 83-year-old tower will undergo painting, increasing safety features, and clearing trees around the tower.
According to a press release from the Department of Natural Resources, The Friends of McCormick’s Creek State Park group collaborated with the DNR to raise nearly $95,000 for the project.
The tower was originally used by the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 589 and was in operation until 1967. The tower now serves as a historic landmark and a public climbing attraction.
Work on the tower is estimated to be complete by November.
