Number Of Hoosiers With Hepatitis A Tops 360 As Outbreak Grows

The state’s Hepatitis A outbreak is now affecting 17 counties, including several in southern Indiana.

Monroe, Jackson, Lawrence, Orange and Washington counties are all experiencing a spike in their usual number of cases.

New data from the State Department of Health says there are 364 cases of the highly-contagious liver infection across Indiana. Just less than half of those diagnosed with Hepatitis A have been hospitalized.

One person has died from the virus.

More students are required to get vaccinated for Hepatitis A as a result of the outbreak. The state also recommends at-risk populations receive the vaccine. That includes intravenous drug users, those experiencing homelessness, men who have sex with men and people who were recently incarcerated.
