Officials have closed Fairfax Road and are limiting access to several surrounding roads in Bloomington after a gas line was damaged Tuesday.
Monroe Fire Protection District spokesman Jason Allen says a contractor was digging in the area and hit a gas line. He says it will take crews two to three hours to shut off the gas and an additional 10 hours to bypass and repair the line.
Fairfax Road is closed between East Moffett Lane and East Dillman Road, with limited access to homes on East Cherry Lane, Linda Lane, East Vera Drive, East Dutcherman Drive, South Beverly Drive, East Nixon Drive and East Hupp Road.
Allen says crews conducted an evacuation of people within 1000 feet of the gas line break, but those who are inside their homes in the area are safe. He says, as a precaution, people already inside should stay inside and those who are not in the area should stay away until further notice.
