Democrats Prevail In Sole Two Contested Bloomington City Council Races

Bloomington City Council newcomer Sue Sgambelluri (D) won the District 2 race Tuesday night, beating Republican challenger Andrew Guenther by almost 150 votes.

In May, Sgambelluri beat out two-term incumbent Dorothy Granger and Daniel Bingham in the Democratic primary.

Sgambelluri won 63 percent of the vote and Guenther garnered 37 percent.

Guenther was the only Republican running for a city council seat this election cycle.

Democrat Ron Smith, a longtime Bloomington resident, edged out two Independent candidates to win the District 3 seat with 46 percent of the vote.

Nick Kappas and Marty Spechler both ran as Independents and received 44 and 10 percent of the vote, respectively.

Allison Chopra currently holds the District 3 seat but did not run for reelection. Chopra recently received backlash for making an obscene gesture at a city council meeting.
