Officials Cite Rise Of Ride-Share Services As One Reason For Bus Route Restructuring

A massive realignment of the Bloomington Transit System could be on the horizon.

BT held a meeting Wednesday to share the results of a study done to look at restructuring routes with the public.

Officials say declining ridership over the past few years, coupled with increased traffic keeping buses from running on time convinced them to launch the study.

BT General Manager Lew May says several routes with declining ridership may have their evening hours reduced.

“We have one route in particular, Route 8, that is a very poor performing route and has been for many years so, we’re looking at redesigning that route," he says.

Ridership in Bloomington is down 15 percent over the past four years, and May partly attributes the decline to the rise of ride-share services like Uber and Lyft.

“Ridership decline is not unique to Bloomington, it’s happening in most transit systems around the country, and there are a lot of reasons for it," he says.

Bloomington Transit will hold an open house to discuss proposed changes at the Monroe County Library on Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m.

After route changes are finalized, they won’t go into effect until August of 2020.
