Cooking This Thanksgiving? Food Prices Are Nothing To Cluck About

It’ll cost less to prepare your Thanksgiving meal this year.

According to the Indiana Farm Bureau, the average total Thanksgiving meal price is estimated to be down about 10 percent from 2018.

The report compiles pricing information from shoppers across the state. A number of items will cost less including Turkey which the organization says should be about 25 percent cheaper. Stuffing and pumpkin pie filling is also cheaper this year.

While that might sound like it would be bad news for local farmers who produce those products, Isabella Chism, the Second Vice President at the Indiana Farm Bureau, says that’s not the case.

"Once the animal or the grain leaves the farm gate, before it gets to the plate, it's got so many transportation costs, and or processing, storage," she says.

Not all items are cheaper, though. Consumers should expect to pay more for both cranberries and fresh vegetables.
