Dozens of intrepid polar plungers stormed into Lake Monroe this despite temperatures hanging in the mid 30’s.

It’s a Monroe County tradition to take the plunge on Jan. 1 and start the year off with a splash.

Around 10 a.m. a man in a polar bear suit led the plungers screaming and laughing into the waters of Lake Monroe.

Jeanice Chastain, helps organize the plunge, she says the recent warm weather helped bring out more plungers than last year.

“Yeah, there was a great turnout, we made some money for the boys and girls club, so that’s a good day,” Chastain says.

All the money raised for the event goes straight to the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington.

This is the fourth year they have done the plunge on the beach at Paynetown State Recreation Area at Lake Monroe.
