Second Amendment supporters rallied Saturday afternoon in Bedford to urge residents to vote this fall and support candidates who shared their views.
Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham attended the rally to show his support for the Second Amendment, but also said it was his duty to enforce the law.
“Essentially, I just wanted to let them know that I do support the Constitution,” Branham says. “I do support the Second Amendment. But I also have a duty to uphold the law. So, I will uphold the law as long as it upholds constitutional standards.”
Supporters of the so-called Second Amendment Sanctuary movement organized the rally.
The movement began last fall when Democrats were elected to majorities in both chambers of the Virginia Legislature. In response, gun ownership advocates across the country began seeking resolutions declaring counties Second Amendment sanctuaries.
In theory, such sanctuaries would refuse to enforce state or national gun laws that local officials perceive as contradicting the Second Amendment.
