As fears over the spread of the coronavirus in Indiana, a Monroe County food pantry is switching to a drive-thru style handout system.
Pantry 279 in Ellettsville is affiliated with Trinity Lutheran Church.
Starting Monday, people needing food assistance may drive up the facility but must stay in their cars. They will then receive a checklist from volunteers.
Cindy Chavez is Pantry 279’s director.
"The people we serve are probably the main people who are going to be hit with corona," Chavez says. "Also, they're the ones who are in the most danger. They have a lot of health compromises, they’re elderly. We want to keep our people healthy as well. So we went to this drive-thru method."
Chavez says that the pantry will continue home delivery for people unable to travel.
She says the pantry is accepting cash donations, non-perishable food, and hygiene items.
