Monroe County could enter into a lawsuit against the U.S. Forestry Service over a planned logging project in the Hoosier National Forest.
County Commissioner Julie Thomas says commissioners will discuss obtaining outside counsel to represent Monroe County in the suit.
“Today we approved the short-term use of a county fund so that the attorneys could begin their work,” Thomas said in an email.
Last month the federal government signed off on a logging project to thin out trees in the Hoosier National Forest.
Environmentalists say the project will harm the region’s water supply, but the U.S. Forestry Service says the logging is taking place far enough away from the Lake Monroe watershed to cause any problems.
