In an email sent out today, IU Health President Dennis Murphy says the IU Health system has screened more than 20,000 Hoosiers for the novel coronavirus in the last three weeks using its virtual screening center.
“More than 1,000 [were] asked to isolate themselves,” Murphy wrote. “There were also 75 patients that we directed to seek additional medical care.”
Murphy says that public testing is not currently available because testing resources everywhere are limited, and IU Health will focus on high-risk and seriously ill patients, or healthcare workers who might have come into contact with someone who had the virus.
“This approach matches the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Indiana State Department of Health,” he wrote.
Murphy encourages those who have symptoms to first get screened for COVID-19 using IU Health’s online 24/7 virtual screening center.
“At this time the best medical advice is simple: wash your hands and practice social distancing by staying at home, avoiding crowds and refraining from touching one another,” he wrote.
IU Health remains open for other healthcare needs.
