COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to increase with 1,138 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus.

Twelve more COVID-19 deaths have driven Indiana’s death toll from the coronavirus pandemic to 139, while the total number of cases approached 5,000, state health officials said Monday.

With 536 new cases confirmed, the total number of Indiana residents known to have the coronavirus has risen to 4,944, the Indiana State Department of Health said.

ISDH says there are now 51 Monroe County residents who have tested positive for the virus — and 371 residents who have been tested in total. No coronavirus deaths have been reported by the state in Monroe County.

Brown County, which has just seven confirmed cases and no deaths, is  stepping up restrictions on travel as local officials seek to discourage out-of-town visitors from overwhelming its businesses.

And an Indiana University biology professer is modifying an existing vaccine that he hopes will become a vaccine for COVID-19.

The complete list of counties with cases is included in the department’s COVID-19 dashboard at  www.coronavirus.in.gov. It is updated daily at 10 a.m. ET and cases are listed by county of residence.
