Indiana University law professor and wife of Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton Dawn Johnsen has tested positive for the coronavirus.

According to a news release from the city, Johnsen has been self-isolating at home since she first experienced symptoms and was notified of her positive test result on Thursday.

On Friday during the city's weekly virtual press conference, Hamilton says his wife began experiencing symptoms earlier in the week.

"She had symptoms just a few days back," Hamilton says. "Dawn has actually been very careful and isolated for quite some time before she had any symptoms."

The mayor was present at the Bloomington Farmers' Market on Saturday, April 4 without a mask on. Hamilton says he didn't touch any food boxes or go within 6 feet of anyone.

The city says in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, Hamilton has been self-quarantining since Johnsen's diagnosis and self-monitoring for symptoms.

“Dawn and I are so grateful for the good wishes of so many, and we will follow the health protocols that help keep each other and our community safe,” Hamilton wrote in the news release.  “I will continue to work from home while I focus on helping Dawn recover and return to good health."

Johnsen has been with IU's Maurer School of Law since 1998.

There have been two confirmed cases of the coronavirus among city employees since March 28: a firefighter who has since recovered and returned to work, and a Parks Department employee who "continues to improve."
