A Terre Haute firefighter has died of COVID-19-related symptoms.

Terre Haute fire chief Jeff Fisher identified the firefighter as John Schoffstall.

“He's been in the hospital since a week ago yesterday, Saturday. He was on a ventilator, and he passed away this morning,” Fisher said Sunday.

Fisher said that five members of the Terre Haute fire department had tested positive for COVID-19 since the coronavirus outbreak began.

“One is returning to work tomorrow. And then I got three others that are recovering. They're all recovering at home,” Fisher said. “John Schoffstall — the firefighter that just passed away — he was the only one that was placed in the hospital.”

Fisher said he didn’t know how Schoffstall became infected.

“People need to take this very seriously. Please take all precautions,” he said.
