Indiana University law professor and wife of Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton Dawn Johnsen is back home after spending 10 nights at IU Health Bloomington Hospital with complications from COVID-19.
Hamilton announced his wife's homecoming at Wednesday night's Bloomington City Council meeting.
"I want to say thank you to the Bloomington community for the encouragement and love expressed to me and our family," Johnsen wrote in a statement read aloud by Hamilton.
Johnsen also publicly posted on Facebook Wednesday, thanking those who worked to help her recover.
Johnsen was hospitalized on April 13 after testing positive for the coronavirus three days earlier. Hamilton began self-isolating as soon as they received Johnsen's positive result and has since tested negative for the virus.
Like any other family member dealing with a positive coronavirus diagnosis, Johnsen was unable to have visitors in the hospital.
“I would want to be the room 24/7 with her, but I can’t even be there at all, so that’s a little hard," Hamilton said to WFIU's Joe Hren during a Facebook Live Ask The Mayor segment April 14.
Johnsen's mother passed away earlier this month from coronavirus-related symptoms and she says her brother was hospitalized as well, but is now recovering at his home in Kokomo.
