IU Health Hospitals To Reopen For Surgery May 4

IU Health hospitals are planning to re-open for non-emergency surgeries on Monday, May 4 th.

IU Health President Brian Shockney says hospitals will be putting steps in place the next two weeks to make sure there’s no cross-contamination between surgery patients and coronavirus patients.

“It is complicated and that’s why we’re only going to ramp up at 25 percent when we start," Shockney says. "We will stay there until we know and we feel comfortable that the data is demonstrating that we’re able to do that well.”

Shockney says easing back into it will allow the hospitals to measure how many surgeries they can handle as the coronavirus continues.

"We've got a back log of patients who have not been able to get their surgeries," Shockney says. "These are people living in pain everyday and we really need to get to these patients."

Gov. Eric Holcomb's current stay-at-home order postpones elective surgeries until at least May 1.
