Holcomb Stays Mum On When Indiana Economy Will Reopen

Gov. Eric Holcomb unveiled his 2020 agenda at a Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
Gov. Eric Holcomb unveiled his 2020 agenda at a Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb remains mum on whether he will extend the state’s stay-at-home order beyond May 1.

But the governor Tuesday hinted at taking a phased in approach to reopening, similar to what is being done in Ohio.  Governor Mike DeWine has allowed some Ohio industries to reopen, and Tuesday lifted an order requiring shoppers to wear masks.

“The question is not when we are going to open the economy, it’s what parts of the economy reopen, and how they will reopen,” Holcomb told reporters at his daily news conference.

Holcomb says opening up too soon could send COVID-19 cases up again and overwhelm the health care system,

“It will not be that lightswitch where the economy is open, [and] we're working," he says.

Holcomb says it may be well into the summer before the entire state’s economy is up and running again.
