MCCSC Sees Decline In Number Of Students Coming To Pick Up Free Lunch

Over the last couple weeks, the Monroe County Community School Corporation has seen fewer students coming to get meals free meals being offered by the Commuity Kitchen and school corporation through the summer.

Since classes in the school corporation moved online March 13, the corporation has continued to provide regular meals for students at 16 locations.

The summer service is meant for all students 18 years-old and under.

Hattie Johnson is the director of food services for MCCSC. She says about 3,000 students qualify for free or reduced lunch in the school corporation.

Last week, Johnson says they served about 450 meals a day.

“We don’t know where the people are. The numbers just aren’t where they were. I don’t know if there’s more cooking at home, and maybe they’re shopping through pantries.”

She says because of the low turn outs, MCCSC may have to reduce the numbers of locations where they provide the lunch pick-ups.

Johnson says the Community Kitchen has also seen a decline in students coming for meals at its 12 locations.

MCCSC and the Community Kitchen partnered this summer to provide free lunch to students at 28 locations.

She says students currently registered for free and reduced lunch can pick up a meal provided by the school corporation Monday to Thursday from 11 to noon.
