The Monroe County Council will hold a special town hall meeting to discuss how the relationship between local enforcement and the public can be improved.
This announcement comes a week after community members spoke against the sheriff’s department proposal to hire two new deputies.

"An outcome from that meeting was the council's committment to focus on listening and understanding the community's concerns and ideas for how law enforcement interacts with the community," county council president Eric Spoonmore says.
The town hall will be held Tuesday, June 30 at 6 p.m.
“I think that the conversations that we are having and are going to have in Monroe County are going to be very fruitful," council member Pete Iversen says. "I’m very much looking forward to this and it’s a positive step in the right direction."
The council will make an announcement closer to the event on whether it will be held virtually or in-person.
Several members of the community say they want to have an open and honest conversation about the current state of local law enforcement.
"You [county council] have a chance to make a difference and set an example for communities around us," resident Sarah Ericson says.
Council member Kate Wiltz encourages people to visit the Monroe County website for updates on the town hall and other county meetings that address local issues.
