Deadline To Obtain Real ID Pushed Back A Year

Changes to Indiana's ID will include a new laser-inscribed black and white photo and miniature portrait on the cards.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says the deadline to meet federal guidelines and obtain a REAL ID has been extended a year because of COVID-19.

Following Governor Eric Holcomb’s executive orders in March, all Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle Branches closed, so Indiana residents were unable to go in and upgrade their driver’s license.

Branches have gradually reopened throughout the state, and starting this week, all branches will take walk-in appointments, including those in Ellettsville and Bloomington.

The deadline to get a REAL ID had been Oct. 1, 2020. That date has been extended to Oct. 1, 2021.

After that date, a REAL ID will be necessary to fly with commercial airlines, enter federal courthouses, military bases, and other security sensitive facilities.
