Bloomington’s mayor says the police department already complies with all but one ‘8 can’t wait’ steps to tighten police use-of-force policies.
The national campaign is in response to the death of George Floyd. It bans chokeholds and requires de-escalation, warning before shooting, intervention, and comprehensive reporting.
Mayor John Hamilton says the one policy in question is banning firearms at moving vehicles.
“If a police officer sees a vehicle heading toward a crowd of protesters, for example, with clear intent to run into that crowd, do we want the police officer in no circumstances to try to stop that with firearms?"

Hamilton says he doesn’t have the answer, but policies like these are good for the community to decide. He says other policies should also be reviewed as evolution continues in public safety measures.
