The Monroe Lake beaches at the Paynetown and Fairfax State Recreation Areas will be closed for Memorial Day weekend after excessive rainfall fully submerged both beaches in water.
In the meantime, the Army Corps will release water from the dam in order to get the water back to normal levels.
Monroe Lake's primary purpose is to provide flood control to downstream areas such as the one along lower Salt Creek, according to a statement on the Monroe Lake Facebook page.
"We understand that closed beaches are an inconvenience, but please remember that flooding our downstream areas creates much [more] than just an "inconvenience" to the people who live, farm, and work along lower Salt Creek," the statement says. "Protecting those people and properties comes first!"
Both beaches will be closed until the water level is stabilized.
