Beginners Tips For Finding Morel Mushrooms

Morel mushroom season is in full swing, and hunters are out looking for the prized fungi.

If you are a beginner, mushroom hunter William Deckard has a few tips for you:

  • Right now, look on southern hillsides. Since it is still relatively cool, southern hillsides are where there will be more sunlight, which helps morels grow in early spring.
    • In another week or so, go deeper into the woods where it is darker and cool. Since it will be hotter, the mushrooms will need cool places to grow so they don't burn up in the sun.
      • Look near ash, elm and poplar trees. Morels tend to grow next to these trees.
        • Look on private property instead of state parks. If you're on private property you're probably competing against fewer hunters. Just make sure you get permission from the property owner first.
