Connie Lawson will retain her role as Indiana Secretary of State.
The Danville Republican, who defeated Marion County Clerk Beth White Tuesday, was appointed to her office in 2012 after her predecessor, Charlie White, was charged with voter fraud.
Lawson, who is the second woman to serve as Indiana Secretary of State, was the first female Majority Floor Leader in the state Senate.
Republicans have controlled the Secretary of State's office for 20 years.
