Early estimates indicate "Giving Tuesday" contributions rose by more than 60 percent over last year, according to a report from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the Case Foundation.
The report finds charitable giving rose to over $45 million during Giving Tuesday, which is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This is the third year Giving Tuesday has been a national trend.
The early numbers show that nearly 300,000 contributions to charities were made benefiting more than 15,000 nonprofits, the number of donations more than doubled and the average amount increased by 6 percent.
Giving Tuesday is largely driven by social media and online giving makes up about 10 percent of contributions. Giving results are expected to grow as offline donations continue to be processed.
The Lilly School of Philanthropy and Giving USA Foundation will take the data and present a larger report on how Giving Tuesday has affected year-end online giving.
