Police reported this week the 36th heroin overdose in Connersville, a town of 13,000, in just two months.
Six people have died from the overdoses. Kelly Wilkson's nephew was one of them.
"I was so angry when he died," Wilkson said. "Angry at the system, angry at him, just angry. I wanted his name and his life to mean something."
Sen. Joe Donnelly, co-author of federal legislation to combat heroin and prescription drug abuse, joined law enforcement and community officials yesterday to talk about possible solutions.
Connersville Police Chief David Counceller says 85 percent of the city's crime rate is tied directly to heroin use.
"Everybody in this community knows somebody, whether it's family or friends or an acquaintance, that has a drug problem of some sort. But mainly right now it's heroin," Counceller said.
Officials there are looking to the state for grant money to open a detox center.
