Governor Mike Pence, R-Indiana, signed legislation Monday requiring Indiana write its own expectations for what students should know and learn at each grade level.
Forty-five states and the District of Columbia adopted the Common Core in 2010. But Indiana's conservative leaders want out. Governor Pence has said repeatedly Indiana will have academic standards written "by Hoosiers, for Hoosiers."
Lawmakers in other states have mounted their own Common Core challenges, but Indiana is so far the only state to repeal the standards. State education officials are writing new standards and are likely to approve them next month.
