Voter turnout had hit about 4 percent this afternoon in Monroe County.
That is significantly lower than four years ago, when turnout was around 12 percent.
Monroe County Clerk Linda Robbins attributes the low voter turnout rate to the fact that there are no statewide races on the ballot—something that hasn't happened in Indiana in more than a decade.
Despite a low turnout of registered voters, Robbins says she's excited to introduce e-poll books into this year's election process. The system allows voters to scan their ids—then county officials can check to make sure they are registered to vote.
"For one thing, they don't have all of the big books that they have to go through to find people's names," she says. "That was very tedious and difficult, and getting everybody's signature as they needed to, that was also very difficult."
County officials say they haven't experienced any technical difficulties today.
