On Sunday, just west of a rusting railroad overpass on the northwest portion of the trail, a woman fended off a sexual assault– the first such attack on the B-Line since it opened. Police say runners being accosted in the middle of the day concerns them, but Captain Joe Qualters says the department feels the trail is generally safe and there's little need to divert many officers to it.
"We've been out here since the trail has been opened and our efforts in that area will not stop. We have enhanced the patrol a little bit regarding Sunday's incident and probably will continue to do so."
Police use a four-wheeled vehicle as part of their trail patrols and are working to make themselves more visible along the three-mile route. Sunday's attacker hasn't been caught.
