A wildfire charred more than 50 acres in a 1.5 square mile area in southeastern Brown County before crews contained it Wednesday evening.
Fifty firefighters from 8 departments were needed to extinguish the blaze, which started just before 4 p.m. roughly five miles southeast of Story off of State Road 135 when a hay bale caught fire on James Davidson's property.
Davidson sustained minor injuries when he attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher he kept on his John Deere tractor.
"I only had one fire extinguisher," Davidson said. "I about had it out, and then the wind came. It just jumped and went everywhere."
Crews had the fire under control by 7:30 p.m. No one else was injured in the blaze.
Southeastern Brown County, like much of the rest of the state, is in the midst of an extreme drought. Last month, crews quickly contained a small 27-acre fire in McCormick's Creek State Park outside Spencer.
